Event date: 09/20/2008 - 10/10/2008

Raleigh, NC (Downtown) • 09/20/2008

September 19, 2008 (RALEIGH, NC) – Purple Armchair, the host for the 2008 CHAIRity Gala & Auction to be held Saturday, October 11 in downtown Raleigh, has announced the host locations for the chairs-turned-art from now until they return to Purple Armchair to be auctioned off to benefit Habitat for Humanity of Wake County.

“We hope folks will go on a ‘chair trail' and visit all of these places to see how amazingly creative our participating artists have been,” said Purple Armchair owner Patrick Lawton, who will also host a few of the chairs in his store at 600 North West Street, including two chairs that feature live plants and one that has been “deconstructed” into wall-mounted art.

On Glenwood South, chair hosts include: Local Color Galleries, The Cupcake Shoppe & Bakery, Edge Office, Kohn Associates, Turkish Delights, Catch 22, The Globe, Hard Times Café, Helio’s, and FM.

Near Glenwood South, The Raleigh Downtowner is hosting a chair in its offices at 617 West Jones Street. The Downtowner and its sister publication, the Raleigh Chronicle, are also co-sponsoring the event.

In Cameron Village, hosts include the Little Art Gallery and the Antiques Emporium.

In the center city, Morning Times at 10 East Hargett Street, Humble Pie at 317 South Harrington Street, and the Downtown Raleigh Alliance (DRA) at 120 South Wilmington Street are hosting chairs. DRA and Humble Pie are also co-sponsors of the gala and auction.

In the City Market complex, the Visual Art Exchange and Collector’s Gallery, both on Blake Street, are hosting chairs.

Near Peace Street, Flander’s Art Gallery at 18 Seaboard Avenue, is hosting a chair.

And in North Raleigh, Salon Moxie in North Ridge Shopping Center (6191 Falls of Neuse Road), Capri Restaurant at 6325 Falls of Neuse, and Margaux’s Restaurant at 8111 Creedmoor Road are hosting chairs. Margaux’s is also a co-sponsor.

The 2008 CHAIRity Gala & Auction, be held Saturday, October 11, from 7 to 11 p.m. involves the efforts of nearly 40 local artists. The artists have “recyled” old wooden chairs from Habitat/Wake’s ReStore into original works of art. The Gala and Auction will include live music, food by Margaux’s and Humble Pie, wine and more. The event is free and open to the public with everyone registering at the door to potentially bid on the chairs-turned-art.

Purple Armchair is located on West Street one block from Glenwood South. An emerging marketplace in the midst of the downtown area, Purple Armchair is a member of the Downtown Raleigh Alliance, DowntownRaleigh.com, and First Friday Art Walk. Business hours are Wednesday-Thursday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Friday and Saturday 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Sunday noon to 5 p.m. The store is closed Mondays and Tuesdays.
